Emerging workplace technologies
By Sundeep Oad & Cheryl Podetz
Has the business world’s newest and greatest asset run away without you? It’s time to catch up! Technology and computers have become an invaluable and essential tool in the automotive industry and have increased efficiency immensely for those smart enough to take advantage. Gone are the days of flipping through pages upon pages for specific car models or engine rods, and don’t forget the ever-famous paper cut! Thankfully now, all it takes is a ‘keyword’ and everything you are looking for appears before your eyes; your valuable time is spared, your customer’s time is spared and they return loyally, time and time again.
A service station no longer has to keep inch-thick customer files barricaded in filing cabinets until they are ‘chosen’ once again. No more day-long searches ending in lost files and aggravated customers, no more searching for parts in mile-high stacks. It’s as simple as creating a database to store all the information you could ever need regarding products, customers, inventory or anything else you might frequently use. Once it’s created (which is not time consuming with training) you’ll never have to worry about losing a file or part again, it will save you so much time that you might even have to take up a new hobby. Auto dealers looking for a fresh idea on making the big sale? Perhaps a new approach to communicating the benefits of your product over the competition could help close the sale.
The use of a spreadsheet application to quickly tailor figures and even graphs and charts to the concerns of a potential buyer could show, rather than tell a customer why this is the perfect automobile for them. The finance department has also greatly benefited from technology. Those tired and cramped calculator-fingers have been put to rest by fast and better yet, extremely accurate software programs to make the load much lighter. So now, instead of spending all their time figuring how much was paid out they can use this extra time to find new ways to save! Manufacturers have certainly embraced the emergence of new workplace technologies. With the help of computers productivity levels have increased to new heights.
Inventories along with shipping details have been specifically catalogued in a database all in efforts to be as efficient and thorough as possible. The bottom line folk’s is, time equals money it’s that simple. Increasing your use of technology appropriately will increase efficiency, save you time and in turn money. So catch up with technology and watch your profits grow! Contact Sundeep here.
Training works for MacPhee
By Al MacPhee, MacPhee Pontiac Buick GMC Ltd
MacPhee Pontiac Buick GMC Ltd. has worked hard to become one of the leading General Motors dealerships in the country. Keeping our staff aware of the advances in computer technology and applications are some ways we have achieved this position. Student Connections has helped us to accomplish this ambition. We were impressed by their enthusiasm to adapt their training sessions to our busy schedule - they even worked on weekends! Furthermore they readily customized their instructions to meet our specific needs, teaching beginners to advanced users. On several occasions, over the course of a year, representatives from Student Connections visited our dealership and presented clear, organized instruction with very comfortable and casual attitudes. Without question I can say our staff benefited greatly from Student Connections’ workshops. Employees are no longer intimidated by their computers and they are more efficient in these challenging and competitive times Student Connections certainly helped us to move forward.

Hennessy introduces Coats Wheel Balancer Model 1250 (photo above). Henness Industries is proud to announce their latest Coats direct drive heavy duty wheel balancer, the model 1250. This is the culmination of many years of LED technology with numerous added features such as 44” capacity, fast 5 second autospin, automatic data entry, 8 balancing modes, 1.5 HP. Direct drive power (No pullies or belts), two shaft sizes, and, full guidance display panel.
Plus! Laser Guidance System to accurately locate stick-on (Tape-A-Weight) weights. Virtually all of today’s vehicles offer alloy or composite wheels as standard or optional equipment and most owners do not want external “hammer-on” weights used. This means stick-on weights which can be a real problem for earlier generation balancers. Many high-end import dealers will appreciate this feature because their vehicles all feature styled wheels, and stick-on weights are standard equipment. Please call 1-866-461-1045 for brochures and/or more information.
Hennessy Industries Canada, manufacturers and distributors of world famous Coats and Ammco equipment, are proud to announce that wireless versions of their highly respected 4800 and 4900 alignment machines are now available in Canada. Although they have been sold very successfully in other countries, patent problems delayed their introduction in North America.
Clear paint repairs scratches
Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., has developed the world’s first clear paint that repairs scratches on painted car surfaces, including scratches from car-washing machines, off-road driving and fingernails. “Scratch Guard Coat” contains a newly developed high elastic resin that helps prevent scratches from affecting the inner layers of a car’s painted surface.
With “Scratch Guard Coat,” a car’s scratched surface will return to its original state anywhere from one day to a week, depending on temperature and the depth of the scratch. The water-repellant paint also has a higher resistance to scratches compared with conventional clear paints. A vehicle painted with “Scratch Guard Coat” will have only one-fifth the abrasions caused by a car-washing machine compared with a car covered with conventional clear paint.
Scratches from car-washing machines account for the majority of scratches to painted car surfaces. “Scratch Guard Coat” is effective for about three years. “Scratch Guard Coat” will be applied for the first time on an SUV model that is scheduled for a partial makeover in the near future. The paint will be applied to the car’s chassis, bumpers, door mirrors and front under mirrors.

PEI Learning Centre linked
Access to the new PEI (Petroleum Equipment Institute) Learning Centre with on-line courses for Service Station Operators is now available through a link at the very bottom of National Energy Equipment’s home page.
The courses are designed specifically for service station managers and operators who want to learn and appreciate the most important aspects of their petroleum system. They are practical and demonstrative vs. highly technical and therefore well suited for quick and easy learning.
There are several courses to choose from which cover piping systems; tank monitoring and leak detection; and overfill and spill containment. Because there are choices for single wall tank and/or single wall piping systems, you should know that for most jurisdictions in Canada only the DOUBLEWALL PIPING and DOUBLEWALL TANK courses are applicable. These on-line courses are $92 ($79 USD) and take about 1 hour to complete.
